I designed this dragon to be a counterpoint to the constantly portrayed angry and violent animals. Dragons cannot be angry all the time. They get old, settle down with the grandkids and enjoy a quiet moment in the sun. He weighs 3 tons and was made with readily available materials by a team of volunteers under my direction. I often use projects like this to introduce artists to new techniques and the joy of sculpting. The "stone-like" ageing, weathering, and lichens were deliberate.
Grandpa now resides in the gardens of Wellington Zoo, New Zealand.
Height: 7 feet. 2012-2013.
